Census of 1900 tell us that Thorvald was engaged as farm worker in Tollefsgård.
This was as we know no future for Thorvald. In 1902 he decided to go to America.
From the Emigration protocol for Christiania (Oslo) say:
In 1902 we find one Thorvald Larsen D. written and registrated, on the microfilm
of the book
say that bachelor worker Thorvald Larsen Dokken, 24 years from
Brandbu went on April 18th. 1902
To Minnesota with steamer Angelo.
(Ref Film NOR 10 -6) The cargo fee was 232 Norwegian kroner.
And he had
permission for leaving Norway. He is registrated on page 182 with the number
3320 this year.
After this decision he went as his brothers before him. His son Carl writes:
"In the age of 20 just finished in the Millitary he went to America. He had a brother
in Wisconsin.
" Here we have the first froof that a brother was here. This can be
only one out of two - LARS or KNUD
(Knut)."
He went here first. Later he came
to Hatton, North Dakota. He worked around on different farms in
different jobs. He
settled after some time in Williston, he claimed land. He worked on this land
for some
time and then sold it and went back to Hatton. Now he worked for the Railroad and
flirting
with the girls. Soon he married Ingeborg Nilsdatter Hegge on 14th October
1909. She was a twin from Biri
- Toten. Her twin brother was Fredrik. They was
born 23rd April 1884. Her mother died after the born
of the twins. Ingeborg was
raised by the grandmother.
After the marriage they decided to settle down in Canada where they knew there
was a lot of land to claim.
